Positive Statements

We use 'have to' to talk about daily responsibilities and obligations.


Positive sentence examples:

I have to use a computer at work.

She has to write a report.

USES OF PRESENT CONTINUOUS

The present continuous is used to express actions happening.


a) at the moment / now:

She's doing her homework now.

They're playing basketball at the moment.


b) around this moment in time:

She's studying Spanish this month.

We're going to do yoga this week.


We also use the present continuous for:

c) a planned future action - plans and schedules


I'm going to dentist this afternoon.

Jack's meeting client.

Aunt Marry is coming tomorrow.

What are you doing tomorrow?

We're flying to New York.

SPELLING OF VERB + 'ING'

Generally, when we add '-ing' to the verb,the verb remains the same:

Talk + -ing  Talking

Work + -ing  Working

Start + -ing  Starting


There are some important exceptions:

A) Verbs ending in 'e'

When a verb ends in 'e' drop the final 'e':


Have --> hav - e + ing = having

LIVE--> liv - e + ing = living

Dance --> dancing

Make --> making



B) Consonant  Vowel  Consonant

When a verb ends in a consonant vowel consonant (i.e.stop) double the final consonant.


Stop + p + ing = stopping

Plot + t + ing = plotting

Swim     swimming

Get        getting

PRESENT CONTINUOUS

Positive Sentences

To be(contracted) + verb + 'ing'


I             'm   reading.

You        're   learning.

He          's    relaxing.

She        's    working.

It            's     raining.

We        're    listening.

You       're    talking.

They     're    eating.



Question Form

Where am i working this month?

Where are you staying?

What is he reading this week?

What is she doing now?

What is it eating?

Who are we playing?

Who are you visiting?

Who are they working with?



Negative Sentences

I'm not(am not) working.

You aren't(are not) sleeping.

He isn't(is not) concentrating.

She isn't(is not) cooking.

It isn't(is not) snowing.

We aren't going out.

You aren't watching TV.

They aren't studying.



A) Use the present continuous to speak about what is happening at the present moment in time.


Examples:

I'm teaching now.

You're listening now.

He's learning at the moment.


B) You can also use the present continuous to speak about what is happening around the moment.


Examples:

We're studying English this month.

She's reading a new book this week.

They're working on a new project this week.

WOULD LIKE + INFINITIVE

There is no contracted form of would like in the question.


Would you like to come out with us tonight?

Would they like to have some wine?

What would you like to order?

Where would you like to go this weekend?



Contracted form of would like in the POSITIVE:


I'd like to be alone with you.

(I would like)

They'd like to have dinner.

He'd like to buy a new TV.

She'd like to visit her friends this weekend.



Contracted form of would not like in the NEGATIVE:


She wouldn't like to stay for the weekend.

I wouldn't like to do that.




SOME AND ANY ( EXCEPTION )

Generally we use 'some' in positive sentences and 'any' in negative sentences and questions.

SOME - Singular or plural

              Positive sentences


Use 'some' to make offers or requests.

'Some' is often used with 'would like' to offer something

to eat or drink.


- Offers

Would you like some lunch?

Would you like some biscuits?


- Requests

Can i have some cheese?

Can we have some water please?
